Curling at Tam Heather

The Curling Sections of Tam Heather provide social and competitive curling for all ages from mid-October until mid-April. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced curler, Tam Heather will offer you top notch curling. Instructional clinics are held for novice and experienced curlers. Special events throughout the year allow members and friends to join in fun and fellowship.

Learn to Curl 1 Day Clinic

If you are interested in learning more about the sport of curling, Tam offers one day clinic on Saturday, October 16, 2010. 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. The emphasis of the day is to have fun; however, participants will learn the basics of curling through class discussion, videos and on ice practice time. Instruction is provided by qualified experienced curlers from the club who volunteer their time to share their passion for curling with others. The cost of the clinic is $25.00, tax included, and includes a light lunch.  For more information about this clinic call the club at 416-284-9251.

Co-Ed Curling Beginners Program

This seven (7) weeks fun program is designed to introduce new curlers to the game of curling. Whether you sign up as a couple, with a friend or by yourself, you will be introduced to the basics of the game without having to become members of the club. Instruction will be given by qualified experienced curlers from the club, who will share their enthusiasm for the sport through class discussion, video presentations by some of the top curlers in Canada and, of course, on ice practice and game time.  The program will be provided every Wednesday 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. October 20, 2010 to December 1, 2010. The cost of the program is $100.00, tax included.  For more information about this  program call the club at 416-284-9251.

Bonspiels

All sections hold bonspiels during the season. To view the current bonspiel schedule, have a look at the events page.

Jitneys

A Jitney is a fun night in which anyone (curlers and non-curlers) can come out to the club, rent one or more sheet(s) of ice, socialize with friends old and new and have fun playing the game of curling. They are organized by the Mixed Section and are run on Saturday nights throughout the season. No experience is required and you do not have to be a member of Tam Heather to enjoy these fun nights.

All you have to do is check the events page for the nights the Jitneys are running, call the club, ask for the Jitney co-ordinator and book a sheet(s) of ice, then get 7 or more friends together and come out to play your game.

Each booking entitles your group to about 2 hours of ice time, a cash bar, after game snacks and a DJ. All equipment, brooms, grippers and sliding tape will be provided by the club; you will need to bring a clean pair of running shoes, (street shoes are not allowed on the ice surface) and warm comfortable clothing.

There are usually 2 draws on each evening we host a Jitney, one at 7 p.m. and one at 9 p.m. Plan to come a little early to get your group ready for going on the ice. Jitneys are filled on a first come, first served, basis. Call now to book your sheet and ice time.

Curling Leagues

Mixed

We have one of the largest Mixed sections in Ontario. Teams are placed, eight to a division, based on past performance so that each division is evenly matched. The season consists of 3 draws of 7 games each. Three bonspiels and bi-monthly 'fun nights' add to the social side of curling. Mixed curling is on either Friday evening or Sunday afternoon depending on the schedule.

Sunday Sinners

The Sunday Sinners league was formed in 1965 at Avonlea C.C. to allow the members to enjoy fellowship, competition and skill development in a relaxed atmosphere on a Sunday morning. The Tam Heather Sunday Sinners league curls on Sunday mornings from 9:45 am to 11:45 am and is open to men and women 19 years of age and over. This league plays the Disc Draw format, therefore, you are required to be at the club at least 15 minutes prior to the start time of the game; to enable the convenor to make up the teams.

If you are a Full Member of the club in either the Men's or Ladies sections you can join this league at no additional cost. For those who are not full members see fees section. Each curler in the League will have a disc with their name on it. When they arrive at the club on Sunday morning, they place their disc on the board over the position that they play. The League Convenor or his representative will then make up the teams from those present and the games will be played and results recorded.

Each week, the curlers are awarded points for a win(5), loss(2) and a tie(3). At the end of the year, the curler with the most points is awarded the Sinners Shield as top curler in the League. The Sunday Sinners have a Christmas and End of Year Breakfast as well as an Awards Ceremony. We are negotiating to have a Home and Home Series with the Sunday Sinners from Richmond Hill and Port Perry. Participation in this Series will be granted according to points.

We invite all members and non-members to join us for fellowship and fun.
